Offensive

This was the last original game developed by my company Wave Software, before it died as a result of Ocean being sold to Infogrames.

The game was intended to be the basis to enable several military scenarios, so there would be a series of games, not just the one. However, Ocean had other ideas and forbid us from using the menu systems we’d intended to enable stratergic decision marking, and the game ended up more like a Populous combined with Cannon Fodder sort of thing. In many ways it was ahead of it’s time, with isometric battlefield that could be viewed from 4 directions. So it was frustrating that Command and Conquer was released a few months before us, with it’s fixed ‘grandstand’ point-of-view. Oh well.

My Contribution

I initially made space for the rest of the team on this development, mainly focussing on designing the gameplay. But after some delays getting the dynamic isometric 3d terrain system working, I stepped in for more hands on development, implementing ‘revolutionary’ systems such as troop embarkation (which Command and Conquer also implemented), and a macro based language to allow the AI to be programmed to engage in historic battles.
